A Boomer in Lachine

Growing Up in the 1950s

by Donald Houston
Shoreline

Do you remember Davy Crockett? How about Roy Rogers and Dale Evans? Most of us have a few special memories of our childhood years. However, Donald Houston seems to have more than a few and most of his stories are hilarious and unusual, as well as bittersweet. Growing up in post-war Lachine in the 1950s was a time when your neighbours were your friends, when your mom was home to make you lunch, and when every house on the street contained three or four kids. It was also a time when a helicopter parent meant something completely different.
